In my honest opinion, appraisal discussions or salary increment discussions are just a formality. You cannot impress your boss in a 30 minutes or 1 hour discussion if you have not been able to impress him/ her throughout the year.
- Every transaction/ task/ meeting is an opportunity to impress or add value.
- Your boss needs to see the ‘value’ in you and your work. You can make this happen by taking the right actions throughout the year. It is not a one time or point in time activity.
- Having said that, appraisal discussion or salary increment discussion is the time to use the ‘right words’, it is the time to express the ‘right sentiments’. In a 30 minutes to 1 hour discussion if you touch the right cords you can make magic happen. Read the next few points carefully.
- Never compare your salary with anyone else.
- When asked for a number or expectation: Quote as big as you can, in fact quote a number which you yourself feel unrealistic.
- Once you quote a big number, never come down or negotiate. Stick to the number.
- Never blackmail by saying that you will stop doing some work or not take additional responsibility or leave the company unless you know that you are indispensable
- Show positivity.
- Ask for more responsibility.
- Share ideas to generate more business// for the growth of your department and company.
